Royal Rajasthan with the Taj Mahal
Forts, the Taj and painted towns
Hill fort · Jodhpur
A colossal fort rising from a sheer rock above the blue city, home to one of India's finest palace museums.
The story
Rao Jodha, the Rathore ruler of Marwar, founded Mehrangarh in 1459 when he moved his capital to Jodhpur. Its walls, up to 36 metres high in places, rise straight from the rock, and later rulers filled the interior with delicate palaces.
The fort is run by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust, and its galleries of palanquins, howdahs, paintings, arms and textiles are among the best kept in India.
What to see
Our tip: Take the audio guide, which is excellent, and walk down through the blue lanes of Brahmpuri instead of driving.
Good to know
Rao Jodha founded it in 1459. Most of the palaces inside were added by later rulers over the following centuries.
Allow two to three hours for the gates, palaces and museum galleries.
Yes, a lift takes visitors up part of the way, which helps those who find the climb difficult.
