Time needed1.5–2 hours

The story

A little history.

Taragarh was built in 1354 on a steep ridge above Bundi, the capital of the Hada Chauhan Rajputs. Its gateways are topped with carved elephants, and its massive walls follow the line of the hills.

Much of the fort is now overgrown and a little ruined, which is part of its appeal. It is quieter than the great forts of Jaipur and Jodhpur, and the views over Bundi are wonderful.

What to see

Don't miss.

  • Bhim BurjThe largest bastion of the fort, where a famous cannon was once mounted.
  • Rock-cut water tanksGreat reservoirs carved into the rock to supply the fort.
  • GatewaysLakshmi Pol, Phuta Darwaza and Gagudi ki Phatak, some now in ruins.
  • Garh Palace belowThe palace on the hillside, with the famous Chitrashala murals.

Our tip: Wear good shoes and go with a guide, as the paths are steep. Monkeys are common, so keep food out of sight.
