The story

A little history.

The fair is held in the Hindu month of Kartik and ends on the full moon, Kartik Purnima, when pilgrims bathe in Pushkar's sacred lake. In the days before, herders from across Rajasthan bring camels, horses and cattle to trade on the dunes outside town.

Alongside the trading there are races, competitions, folk music, a fairground and religious ceremonies, making it one of the most colourful events in India.

What to see

Don't miss.

  • Livestock tradingThe heart of the fair, best in the early days and early mornings.
  • Camel races & competitionsRaces, camel decorating and other contests on the fair ground.
  • Folk music & dancePerformances by Rajasthani musicians and dancers.
  • Kartik PurnimaThe full-moon day when thousands of pilgrims bathe in the holy lake.

Our tip: Book hotels or a camp months ahead, and arrive in the first days of the fair, when the trading is at its busiest.
