Tigers, birds and the Taj
Tiger reserve · Alwar
Wooded valleys and rocky hills in the Aravallis, close to Delhi and Jaipur, where tigers have made a remarkable return.
The story
Sariska was the hunting ground of the rulers of Alwar and became a tiger reserve in 1978. By 2005 its tigers had disappeared, a turning point for wildlife protection in India.
Tigers were moved here from Ranthambore from 2008 onwards, and the population has slowly grown again. The reserve is also home to leopards, sambar, nilgai, jackals and rich birdlife.
What to see
Our tip: Sariska fits neatly between Delhi and Jaipur. An afternoon safari breaks the drive.
