The story

A little history.

Jaigarh was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1726 to defend Amber and the Kachhwaha treasury. Unlike the palaces below, it is a working military fort, with thick walls, watchtowers and its own cannon foundry.

It is connected to Amber Fort by passages through the hillside, and was never taken in battle. Its ramparts give some of the widest views over the Aravalli hills and the old capital.

What to see

Don't miss.

  • Jaivana cannonCast in the fort foundry in 1720, it is one of the largest cannons on wheels in the world.
  • The foundryWhere the Kachhwaha armies cast their guns, with original furnaces and moulds.
  • Diya BurjThe seven-storey watchtower, the highest point of the fort.
  • Water tanksHuge underground reservoirs that once kept the garrison supplied for years.
  • Armoury & museumSwords, shields, guns and photographs from the royal collection.

Our tip: Combine Jaigarh with Amber on the same morning, and visit Nahargarh Fort along the same ridge for sunset.

Good to know

Questions travellers ask.

Is Jaigarh Fort connected to Amber Fort?

Yes. Passages link the two forts, and you can walk between them, though most visitors drive up the hill road.

How big is the Jaivana cannon?

Its barrel is about 6 metres long. It was cast in 1720 and, by most accounts, fired only once as a test.

Can I visit Jaigarh, Amber and Nahargarh in one day?

Yes. With an early start, a full day covers all three forts along the same hills.
